I think this tweet says it all.
Eleven tries were made. Three by Merit Sharpe. Three by Katherine Larson. And one each by Natalie McCarthy, Steph Burke, Clare Farrow, Mandy Fiery, and ROOKIE Storey Stadler!
EWR made nine of its conversion kicks. 6 by Katherine Larson and 3 by Lexie Chickene.
AND to top it off…EWR has new jerseys! What do you think? Pretty snazzy, right?
Be sure to see them for yourselves at this weekend’s home game against Guilford! THIS Saturday, the 27th, at 5:30pm!
Today, EWR celebrated the end of an amazing year of rugby and the 8 incredible seniors who will be graduating in two weeks! This is a game you DO NOT want to miss!
The Elon Women’s Club Rugby team has had quite a Spring Matrix season! Whether you were on every sideline or couldn’t catch a game, here is the season in review!
On February 8th, EWR started off its season beating UNC Charlotte 48-5! EWR made eight tries: four by Smurf (Lauren Sheridan), two by Natty Light (Natalie McCarthy), one by Brittany Graham, and another by Mandy Fiery! Smurf scored two of Elon’s conversion kicks, with the other two by KP (Katie Pullman). Scrum Player of the Game went to Smurf and Backline Player of the Game went to Merit Sharpe! A star performance by rookie Darrah O’Flaherty!
On March 1st, EWR traveled to Columbia, South Carolina to take on the USC Gamecocks! It was a close game, the two teams coming up tied twice, but in the end USC prevailed 24-19. Merit Sharpe scored two tries, Clare Farrow scored a try, and Smurf scored two conversion kicks! Backline Player of the Game went to Lexie Chickene and Scrum Player of the Game went to Courtney Stover. An incredible job by Fallyn Sheff, Katie Blackburn, and Koala (Kristen Bryar) for great rugby playing!
EWR’s third and final game of the season was on March 15th at UNC Wilmington! A tough game, UNCW won 24-7. EWR started off the game strong with a try by Mandy Fiery, and a conversion kick by Smurf (Lauren Sheridan)! The first half ended with two tries by Wilmington. In the second half, Wilmington scored two more tries, with serious opposition from EWR. Backline Player of the Game went to Merit Sharpe and Scrum Player of the Game was Maddy Rooney!
EWR would like to give a HUGE thanks to our coach, Katie! She has helped our team tremendously, teaching us new skills at practice and supporting us on the sidelines at games. EWR feels very lucky to have her!
Win or lose, EWR’s talent, fearlessness, and team spirit have all grown tremendously this season. Thank you to everyone who has cheered us on!
On Friday, April 4th, EWR made their way up to Maryland for the 48th Annual Cherry Blossom Rugby Tournament! The tournament takes place every year at Rosecroft Raceway, where over 35 teams, both women and men, come to compete.
On Saturday morning, EWR lost to University of Connecticut. Later in the day, EWR competed against Stony Brook University. Though it was a close game, Stony Brook prevailed. On Sunday, EWR lost to Columbia University.
Despite the losses, the talent on Elon’s team was apparent. Backline Player and Scrum Player of the Game both went to rookies, Gisele Nighswander and Amanda Echavarri, respectively. While the rookies played extremely well, it was also a bittersweet moment for EWR’s seniors who were playing their final Cherry Blossom. They surely will be missed.
See you next year, Cherry Blossom!
